FAQ for Candles

Q. What is the correct way to extinguish a candle?

Never extinguish a burning candle with water!! Wax and water simply do not mix. When you put water on a burning candle, it can make the flame grow larger. It's like putting water on a grease fire in the kitchen; the fire can increase uncontrollably.

 

Using water to extinguish a candle may also cause a glass candle to break! Blowing out a candle can result in accidentally blowing hot wax on you or things nearby.

 

Always smother the flame! That's why a snuffer – which robs the flame of the oxygen it needs to burn – is the recommended method for extinguishing any candle.

 

Q. Why do instructions on jar candles advise not to reuse the containers?

Improper use and transport can produce unseen weaknesses in the containers. In addition, candle formulations and wick sizes are carefully chosen for each container. It is not safe to refill the glass with any candle of unknown characteristics. We do recommend that you continue to enjoy them for storage of small items, candy dishes or collections. And of course, please recycle any glass you do not plan on saving.

Q. Why do some candles give off smoke?

Once again the key to this answer is proper burning conditions. Always trim wicks to 1/4″ before lighting. If a high flame or smoking is noted during a burn, extinguish, trim the wick again to 1/4″ and relight. Drafts can also be an important factor. They can cause a candle to burn unevenly exposing more wick than necessary. Remember, air vents, open windows and overhead fans all create air currents that will cause the flame to smoke.

 

Q. Why are the burning instructions on each decorative candles?

Each style of home interior candles requires certain special handling to insure your safety and to enhance the enjoyment of your candle burning experience. For example, votive candles should always be burned in a votive cup, pillar candles on a plate or pillar holder, discontinue burning when 1/2″ of unmelted wax remains to avoid container breakage. Before lighting always take time to read the important burning instructions on each candle before use.

 

Q. Why do the instructions recommend that you discontinue burning filled jar candles when 1/2" of unmelted wax remains?

To avoid any possibility of the flame coming in contact with the bottom or sidewall of the glass container, we recommend you stop burning when there is 1/2″ of hard, unmelted, not liquid, wax remaining. Some wax should remain on the bottom for safety's sake! Always burn jar candles and all decorative candles on a heat resistant surface.

 

Q. Why do small balls sometimes form on candle wicks?

This activity is frequently called mushrooming. This is a clear sign to extinguish, trim the wick back to 1/4″ and relight. Take care not to drop any of the trimmings or any other foreign material in the pool of wax. This "mushroom" formation typically will form when the candle is burning too fast.

 

Q. What is the recommended burning time for decorative candles?

We recommend burning for up to four hours at each lighting to receive the most efficient and safe use of your jar candles. Allow the candle to cool, trim the wick to ¼" and relight.

 

Q. What is "fragrance throw" and what releases the aroma into the air?

We understand the importance of your fragrance experience and strive to provide you with the very best scented candles. "Cold throw" is what you experience when the candle is not burning and "hot throw" occurs when it is burning. Fragrance is emitted into the air from the melted wax pool.

 

Q. What are essential oil candles?

Essential oils are extracted from a variety of flowers, herbs and fruits. Some examples might be lavender, orange or grapefruit in the citrus family or perhaps spearmint. Essential oils are natural and are not compounded in a laboratory. The use of these oils is yet another enhancement of your fragrance experience.
